Is Antifascism Reactionary? …and if it is, is that a bad thing? If it is not or doesn’t have to be, what practices could we engage in to make it revolutionary? Leaving the tired and annoying right-wing and “centrist” criticism of antifa aside, let’s concentrate on the inside leftist critique. Of which there is plenty—as should be, seeing that antifascism has been one of the most spectacular, immediate, and, some would argue, successful fields of practice in the history and present of the Left (whatever that is).
Our short presentation and long discussion will be organised around a compilation of quotes from various sources, representing three propositions:
1) Antifascism addresses the symptoms of capitalism instead of tackling its structure, promotes liberal worldview, and is, therefore, reactionary
2) Antifascism is reactionary, but that is a good thing: in the times of rising fascism, “revolutionary goals” must give way to mainstreaming and broad alliances
3) Antifascism can become a revolutionary praxis by engaging in on-the-ground practices outside of the spectacular protests and blockades
The text (once it’s ready) will be available online on the websites of D-Zona (d-zona.cz) and Warsaw Independent Bookfair, it will also be handed out in physical form at the Bookfair. Reading the text beforehand is important for those who want to actively participate in the discussion. The discussion will be held in English.
